State-recognised university degree

The job description of a data protection officer covers complex requirements and cannot be taught within a few days. A degree in university format gives you profound knowledge and your customers quality.

I am Prof. Dr. Andre Döring, CEO of Robin Data GmbH

CEO of Robin Data GmbH and Head of Robin Data Academy

Hello, I am Prof. Dr. Andre Döring, my goal is to make qualitative data protection easy to implement - for prospective experts, but also for all data protection officers. Because with the right training, data protection can not only bring success to your customers, but also to you as an entrepreneur.

During my many years as a data protection officer, I have often observed that data protection officers, after only 4 days of theoretical training, did not know how to provide high-quality customer care in practice. I have often had conversations in which data protection officers told me that they do not know where to start in order to acquire new customers on the one hand and to provide them with high-quality advice on the other.

For this reason, we developed the certificate course for company data protection officers together with Merseburg University of Applied Sciences and YouGrow. Also because the job description of a data protection officer covers complex requirements and, in my opinion, needs a state-recognised degree from a university.

If you feel the same way, then I look forward to hearing from you. Participation in the further training Data Protection Officer!

What the participants of the 2021 certificate course say

Many thanks to the Robin Data team! The course provides sound knowledge for work. The modules are sensibly designed and build on each other. The lecturers from the field often explain the theoretical basics with comprehensible examples and have an open ear for the questions of the participants. In addition, there is an insight into exciting tools that make work easier.

Thank you to all the lecturers! Participating in the certificate course for company data protection officers was immensely beneficial to me and I had a lot of fun participating. The modules and lecturers were mostly practical and taught with many examples from everyday life. In addition to the fundamentally important modules such as data protection and data protection law, the topic of quality management was interesting and informative for me personally.

I took part in the course because I liked the format very much. Not only legal aspects but also IT security aspects were discussed and how to implement a DSMS (project and risk management) was dealt with concretely using practical examples. I can use the knowledge gained very well in my job as a legal advisor and data protection officer and look it up in the rich portfolio of teaching materials. The competent lecturers understood how to convey the material in a varied way, although the timing after work and on weekends was exhausting for everyone.

Funding of up to 90 % is available for the corporate data protection officer certificate course.

FAQ

Interested persons can learn the profession of data protection officer at companies and associations through short one-week courses. In practice, however, the knowledge imparted is hardly sufficient to provide comprehensive and legally compliant support to companies and authorities. A state-recognised university degree conveys not only theory, but above all practical experience from counselling. The lecturers are mostly from the consulting practice themselves and impart important knowledge based on their experience, such as the practical implementation of a data protection management system.

In some companies, internal data protection officers (DPOs) are appointed. An internal DPO is an employee of the company and is appointed by the management as the person responsible for the lawful implementation of the GDPR. There must be no conflict of interest between the previous position in the company and the appointment as DPO, i.e. the internal DPO must not belong to the IT department, the HR department or the management.

The salary of a data protection officer depends strongly on previous experience and also on education or degree. Newcomers to the profession earn from 24,000 euros annually, after a few years of experience the salary rises to an average of 33,000 euros, and data protection officers with several years of professional experience earn up to around 60,000 euros.

In particular, self-employed data protection officers with a state-recognised university degree can charge higher hourly rates. Graduates of the corporate data protection officer certificate course are able to provide comprehensive support to companies and authorities and can thus embark on a profitable career path.

The prerequisites and qualifications for the profession as a data protection officer are achieved through further training. According to Art. 37 (5) DSGVO there are three requirements for the appointment of a data protection officer:

professional qualification in the field of data protection law
Expertise in the field of data protection practice
Ability to perform the tasks that Art. 39 GDPR calls

In addition to the requirements of the GDPR, we recommend the following competences in order to provide comprehensive support to companies and public authorities and to be able to pursue a profitable and attractive career path:.

  • Data protection basics and deepening
  • Basics of information security
  • Quality Management
  • Organisational consulting and project management
  • Practical implementation of a data protection management system

A company is obliged to appoint a data protection officer as soon as 20 employees are permanently involved in the automated processing of personal data, the core activity of the company is the processing, collection or use of personal data, or sensitive personal data is processed.

A data protection officer must have communication skills. Although in principle anyone can become a data protection officer, it is advisable to have further interdisciplinary knowledge, such as in the areas of risk, project and quality management as well as information security.

Data Protection Officers are appointed in accordance with Art. 39 GDPR obliged to monitor compliance with the GDPR, as well as to inform the controller, processors and employees. They take an advisory role in the company and are also contact points for supervisory authorities.
